Carrot Family, Apiaceae
The Carrot family, Apiaceae was formerly known as Umbelliferae, because their flowers are arranged into a flat umbrella-like head. The family is known for the many useful and also culinary herbs that it contains. It is represented all over the world and is comprised of around 380 genera and almost 3,000 species. In Finland there are 36 genera and 50 species. Its most well-known members are carrot, parsnip, parsley and dill, and an example of a “useless” plant might be poisonous cowbane. Culinary herbs include anise, caraway, chervil and coriander.
