Heather Family, Ericaceae
In a global context the Heather family is quite large, with 145 genera comprised of 3,500 species, mainly dwarf shrubs and small bushes (not to mention a few climbers and some herb-stemmed plants too). The size of the family got a boost when it gradually incorporated several other families, three of which are familiar to Finns – the Crowberry family (Empetraceae), Wintergreen family (Pyrolaceae) and Dutchman’s Pipe family (Monotropaceae). Since this enlargement the Heather family now includes 17 genera comprised of almost 30 species, most of which grow in the forest, including nearly all the highly-valued forest berry plants.
