Spurge Family, Euphorbiaceae
The Spurge family is large in a global context with around 230 genera and over 6,500 species, most of which are grass-stemmed, but it also includes trees and bushes. Of the wooden-stemmed members of the family the most familiar to Finns is probably poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima). In Finland the family is represented by 2 genera, of which the type genus spurges are larger with 6 species (there are over 2,000 species worldwide). The second genus is Mercurialis.
