Pine Family, Pinaceae
The Pine family has 11 genera of trees and bushes worldwide, of which the most familiar in Finland are genera Pinus (which includes Scots pine) and Picea (which includes Finland’s Christmas tree aka Norway spruce). Other Pine family trees such as fir (genus Abies), Douglas fir (genus Pseudotsuga) and larch (genus Larix) are also pretty familiar from parks and gardens – and these are all evergreen apart from the larch species. The Pine family contains a total of 11 genera with around 250 species worldwide. The largest of these is the type genus Pinus, which contains half the family’s species.
The order of conifers Pinales is represented by 3 families in Finland, with the Cypress and Yew families making up the threesome with the pine family.
