Mallow Family, Malvaceae
The Mallow family contains some of Finland’s best-known ornamental species, and it is quite large with almost 250 genera and over 3,700 species. The number of feral plants or escapes from cultivation is much more modest in Finland with only a dozen species out of 5 genera, the most established of which is low mallow. The most recent research has swelled the Mallow family’s ranks by adding genus Tilia, whose main representative in Finland is small-leaved lime. In other parts of the world e.g. cotton push and cocoa tree (an essential ingredient in the preparation of chocolate and cocoa and is thus very important in Finland) also belong to the Mallow family.
