Dock Family, Polygonaceae

Also known as Knotweed and Buckwheat Family. The family’s best-known members are the sorrels, docks and even rhubarb, but it contains a total of 56 genera and at least 1,300 confirmed species, including trees, bushes and herb-stemmed plants. In Finland there are 10 genera with 40 species. The family and genus Polygonum take their name from the Greek words poly and goni, meaning many knots or knees in reference to the family’s characteristic feature – the swollen joints in the stems of the plants.
