Species from Primrose Family, Primulaceae: 13
Primrose Family, Primulaceae
The Primrose family is best known for cowslip, but it contains around 70 genera and 2,500 species which grow in different parts of the world. In Finland there are 7 genera and 20 species. The family’s scientific name Primulaceae means ‘first’ and refers to their early flowering time of Primula family members. However, Primrose family members are not the first plants to appear in Finland: that honour goes to hepatica, coltsfoot and wood anemone, neither of which have anything to do with primroses.
