Bedstraw Family, Rubiaceae
Also known as Madder family. The Bedstraw family does not have many members in Finland – 4 genera with around 20 species – compared to its global statistics – over 600 genera with over 13,000 species. It is the fourth largest family in the plant world with regards to number of species, most of which are bushes, although in Finland only herb-stemmed members of the family grow. On the other hand Finns make use of the fruits of a certain Bedstraw family bush more than any other nation in the world – coffee is Finns’ unofficial national drink. It is a member of genus Coffea and a member in the Bedstraw family (also called Coffee family and Madder family).
