Birch Family, Betulaceae

The Birch family is comprised of 6 genera worldwide, all of which are comprised of trees or bushes. Of these, 3 genera are represented in the wild in Finland, the most species-rich of which is genus Betula with 3 species (117 worldwide). The other two genera that are represented in Finland are alders (Alnus), 2 species (44 worldwide) and hazels (Corylus), 1 species (17 worldwide). In all the birch family has a total of 230 species.
When the decision about Finland’s national tree was made in 1988, the winner was – naturally – silver birch, which is the preferred tree to make sauna whisks from.
